Crossing the Border With Your Pet:

Rules and restrictions can change. To verify border information, call:

  1. Pet Requirements: (Same for Canada & U.S.) Dogs and cats must have certificates issued by a licensed veterinarian identifying each animal and certifying that each dog/cat has been vaccinated against rabies during the preceding 36 months' period. Up to two puppies and kittens under three months do not require certification.
  2. Pet Food:
    Crossing into the U.S.: Unopened pet food containing beef, lamb, goat or bison is allowed entry into the U.S. if it was made in the U.S. Open containers will be confiscated. Foods containing pork, seafood and chicken are allowed.
    Crossing into Canada: Any pet food containing beef products (opened or otherwise) is not allowed entry into Canada.

Off-leash Parks & Trails In Bellingham

  • Lake Padden Park: the fenced area and dog water exercise area near the softball fields, and some secondary trails
  • Whatcom Falls Park: all trails north of the creek
  • Bloedel Donovan Park: off leash all daylight hours during the winter and until 10 a.m. from May 1 to Sept. 30
  • North Lake Whatcom Trail
  • Arroyo Park: all trails
  • Sunset Pond and Bug Lake: all trails and the water
  • Post Point water treatment area: field, trails and lagoon adjacent to the treatment facility.
  • Sehome Hill Arboretum: secondary trails
  • Little Squalicum Park: all trails and the water
  • Hovander Homestead Park: off-leash area. Located in Ferndale
